Minister of FUN!

We would like to welcome our newest team member, Tom McMahan, to Pemba Serves!

Tom McMahan, outdoor industry veteran of thirty years, has joined the Pemba Serves team in the newly created position of Minister of Fun. Brad Werntz, the President of Pemba Serves, has identified the importance to the hardworking agency of regular and spontaneous fun events: Time set aside to shut down the computers for a couple of hours and go out and “play”.

Tom McMahan, who has been playing on the Pro Leisure Tour since his retirement in 1993, has agreed to help facilitate this initiative. Says McMahan, “I feel as if I have been preparing for this job all my life. I’ve observed in my own career as a rep, as well as many others, that we can get caught up in the everyday details of the job and lose sight of the reasons most of us choose the outdoor industry as a career. After all, we’re in the business of selling Fun.”

As a rep, Tom represented such brands as The North Face, Montbell, Mountain Hardwear, Vasque and Asolo. He was a Charter Member of the Outdoor Rep Association, serving as president and board member for many years. He also co-founded and directed the ORA Campership Fund, which has helped send hundreds of kids to summer camp. Tom was also a long time member and served on the board of MWSRA.

We are VERY excited to have Tom on board. Please help us welcome him! He’s all set up with his own e-mail and everything.

I added a new link to our “Pemba’s Playmates” list earlier this week and I wanted to make sure all of our loyal readers check it out.  Claire Porter, formerly of Midwest Mountaineering, is hiking as much of the Pacific Crest Trail as she can this year.  Unfortunately her partner had to bow out early due to a herniated disk so Claire is hiking the rest of the trip solo.

We’re wishing her the best of luck this year and hope that the trip goes well for her.  Check out her site and updates at pcrexp.com.  She has a pretty cool interactive map as well so you can keep up to date with where she’s been.

In more Midwest Mountaineering news, congrats to Andy Knapp for being inducted into the Adventurers and Explorers Hall of Fame.  Check out the SNEWS article here.
